My
heroes are those with disabilities - like my brother Joe, who has grown
up with Cerebral Palsy. Their needs are many, yet they receive next to
nothing in order to provide them with just the simple things most of us
take for granted in our "pursuit of happiness." My hope is that
someday through art and politics, the plight of the disabled in America
will be seen and understood for its real value, lack of sustenance, and
ineptitude's.
God
bless those less fortunate and their families who struggle to help them
as best they can. And most of all, God bless a government who pretends
they don't exist by handing them a medicaid card and a disability check
that equate to one quarter the baseline American poverty rate for a
single individual. Section 8 housing is a joke. Assisted living is
nothing but government abuse and fraud.
Through
no fault of their own those with disabilities were born with permanent
physical and mental challenges. Yet their "pursuit of happiness" is
less than that of healthy out-of-work able bodied people or most
minority households. It's a travesty which gets no attention
nationally.
